Generic Facts
Turkey is a republic, the capital is Ankara and the country is divided into 81 provinces. Turkey is situated on the Anatolian peninsula, which is also known as Asia Minor and is surrounded by the Black Sea, the Marmara Sea and the Mediterranean. In the west, Turkey shares boundaries with Greece and Bulgaria and in the east with The Soviet Union, Syria, Iran and Iraq. Turkey is frequently referred to as a land-bridge connecting Europe to Asia.
Politics
The Turkish republic was established on the 29th of October 1923. At the Head of the republic is the State President, who is elected every seven years by secret ballot. Before Parliament can sit a majority of two-thirds is required. The government consists of a Prime Minister who is appointed by the State President and his ministers. The country is divided into 81 provinces, which are administered by governors. Mayors, committees of municipal authorities and citizen committees administer the cities.
Education
Children begin school at the age of seven and compulsory school education continues for eight years. After this there are three years of secondary school (lise). In Turkey there are over 70,000 primary schools, 6,000 secondary schools, 2,000 technical lise and 29 government funded universities.
Economy
Turkey has a strong agricultural based economy; the main export products are wheat, cotton, sugar, sunflowers and tobacco. Turkey is the largest wool producer in Europe, thus textiles have become one of the main export goods of the country. Turkey also has a number of other thriving industries such as production of motor vehicles, appliances, pharmaceuticals and consumer goods. The export growth rate of the last few years has been over 25%, which puts Turkey amongst the highest in the world. Tourism has become one of the most important sectors of the economy bringing in billions of dollars of currency.
